In 1975, Jasmine Gamal formed the Al As Har Belly Dancers. We have toured Egypt and Europe three times since we have begun. We have also, entered National Competitions in Dance. For example, at a competition held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, our dancers took First Place in costumeing (out of 900 groups performing from all over the World, from Australia to Japan). We also took first place in that particular dance. Our goal was to uplift Middle Eastern Dance to a "legitimate" dance form, competing with jazz, ballet, tap, modern, etc. We have been very successful and I am very proud of our dancers. We perform for conventions and convalescent homes alike. What we do, is share who we are and the great potential we have to enlighten the lives of others.

I am also an Anthropologist/Sociologist with an emphasis in Middle Eastern studies. I perform all over the US and recently had the HONOR and the great privelege of being invited to CASABLANCA, MOROCCO to dance for the royal family and the wonderful KING HASSAN!!! Classically trained in ballet and modern dance, Travis began studying Oriental dance in 1971 with Elizabeth Cogburn. After working with this form with many teachers, she expanded her studies to include Kathak, Flamenco, folk dance, clogging, tambourine and frame drum. In 1990 she was introduced to Central Asian dance by Laurel Victoria Gray of Washington, D.C. and in 1992 Travis traveled to Uzbekistan in Central Asia to study and perform there as a guest artist. Based in Santa Fe, NM, Travis performs her solo concerts around the U.S. and overseas. She teaches classes, workshops and seminars (including the annual Central Asian Dance Camp with Laurel Victoria Gray) to adults and children, and works as an Artist-in-Residence in schools throughout New Mexico. Her current solo concert is titled: "Courting the Heart: Dances from Central Asia, the Middle East and Original Works." (1997-98)
